Test process and operation
The Salt fog corrosion testing can be divided into neutral salt spray test, acid salt spray test and copper accelerated acetate spray test according to the specific requirements of the test.
Here today, I give you an example of the specific test operation of the neutral salt spray test:
1. Sample preparation: Select the material or coating to be tested, and the shape and size of the sample should meet the requirements of the standard (such as ISO 9227 standard). Carefully clean the surface of the sample to remove oil, dust and other contaminants.
For example, when handling metal samples, specific solvents may be needed to remove stubborn oil stains.
2. Preparation of test equipment: Comprehensively check the functions of the salt spray test chamber, including spray system, heating system, temperature and humidity control. Ensure that the salt spray solution in the test chamber meets the standard ratio, usually 5% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution is used.
For example, if the heating system fails, it may cause the test temperature to be unstable, which will affect the test results.
3. Setting of test conditions: First set the test temperature (usually 35℃, but it can be adjusted appropriately according to the characteristics of the test sample). Set the spray concentration and spray cycle reasonably to ensure that the salt spray can be evenly covered on the test sample.
For example, for some special coating samples, lower or higher test temperatures may be required to accurately assess their corrosion resistance.
4. Sample installation: Place the sample firmly inside the test chamber to ensure that the surface of the sample is perpendicular to the direction of spraying, and maintain appropriate spacing between each sample.
For example, if the sample spacing is too small, it may cause the salt spray to interact with the samples, affecting the accuracy of the test.
5. Salt spray: Start the test chamber to carry out the salt spray test, which generally lasts from 24 hours to several hundred hours, depending on the specific standard. During the test, check and record the temperature and humidity in the test chamber regularly.
For example, certain high-precision electronic components may only require a short salt spray test time to reach valid conclusions.
6. End of test: After the salt spray test, take out the sample and rinse it with deionized water to remove salt.
The samples were dried and subsequent evaluation was carried out.
7. Result evaluation: The corrosion degree of the sample surface (such as rust area, rust depth, etc.) can be detected by visual observation or instrument. According to the production standard, the corrosion resistance of the sample is evaluated to determine whether the product is qualified and whether it can be put into production.
For example, for the corrosion resistance evaluation of auto parts, it may be necessary to combine multiple detection methods and strict standards to ensure their quality.
Equipment structure
Spray chamber: Its role is to generate and distribute salt spray, generally including nozzle, salt spray generator and other components.
Heating device: The brine solution is heated to maintain the temperature required for the test.
Salt storage tank: mainly used to store brine solution, so that the concentration can be maintained in a stable state.
Salt spray generator: By using ultrasonic waves or spray nozzles, the brine is atomized into tiny droplets to form salt spray.
Control system: Equipped with digital thermostat and hygrometer, it can monitor and adjust the temperature and humidity of the experimental environment in real time.
Overall material: The material used in the salt spray test chamber needs to have corrosion resistance, and its internal surface is usually made of stainless steel or treated with corrosion resistant coating.
Safety measures: The equipment shall be equipped with a drainage system and anti-splash design to ensure safe operation.
Standard: The salt spray test chamber should comply with relevant international standards, such as ISO 9227, ASTM B117, etc., to ensure the reliability and comparability of test results.
For example, in some industrial production, salt spray test chambers are used for corrosion resistance testing of metal products. Like auto parts, aerospace equipment, etc., need to pass the salt spray test to verify its durability in harsh environments. For example, if the shell of the electronic device is to be used in an environment with a high concentration of salt spray such as the coast, it also needs to be tested in the salt spray test chamber to ensure that it can work normally.
Neutral salt spray test is an important method to evaluate the corrosion resistance of materials. Correct test process and suitable test equipment are the key to ensure the validity of test results. The use of standard salt spray test chamber can improve the accuracy of the experiment and the quality of the product, greatly reduce the cost of manual trial and error and time cost, is currently a very effective test method.
